The Spanish-language media continues to watch Arizona, where Governor Jan Brewer is expected to sign the criminalization bill SB 1070 in the next few days. Meanwhile, as nationwide demonstrations on May 1st for comprehensive immigration reform approach,Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is pushing for action in the Senate.

While federal lawmakers cautiously mull over the possibility of dropping a comprehensive immigration reform bill this year, legislators in Arizona have passed yet another law that criminalizes undocumented immigrants. What’s more, the Arizona House is advancing a bill that would require the Arizona Secretary of State to review President Barack Obama’s birth certificate before his name is allowed on any ballots.

The Spanish-language media highlights a bipartisan appeal to stop deporting DREAM Act students, while keeping attention on Arizona’s criminalization bill and the shifting prospects for comprehensive immigration reform in Congress.

Yesterday, thanks to thousands of you, as well as our tireless Arizona and national partners, we delivered over 50,000 petitions to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer asking her to veto the state’s terrifying new immigration bill.

Yesterday, we delivered over 50,000 petitions to Gov. Brewer’s office, thanks to you and our partners. The Governor has until Saturday to decide whether to sign this un-American bill into law.

Please send a fax directly to the Governor today, asking her to veto racial profiling!

Today, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) released a letter to the Obama Administration asking for a halt in deportations of immigrant youth who would be eligible for the DREAM Act, which would permit certain undocumented students to become permanent legal residents if they came here as children, are long-term U.S. residents, and attend college or enlist in the military for at least two years.

The Spanish-language press continues to focus on Arizona bill SB 1070, which would criminalize undocumented immigrants. Demonstrations for comprehensive reform planned for May 1st and comments from a senator indicating Congress may take up reform next month are also noted.
