Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is up to his old tricks on immigration. Today, he issued a new video highlighting the depths of his hypocrisy when it comes to getting serious about reforming our broken system. Below is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice Education Fund, responding to this new video:
This video from John Cornyn is outrageous. He portrays himself as an advocate for migrants who lost their lives in the desert, yet he is the sitting Senator most responsible for blocking reform that would modernize our immigration system in a way that would serve our nation’s interests, reflect our nation’s values and save migrants’ lives. He voted against reform in 2006 and again in 2007. He voted against the DREAM Act in 2010. All this after consistently calling himself a reformer.
The way to fix our dysfunctional immigration system, better control our border and create a humane alternative to unauthorized migration is to pass comprehensive immigration reform. The Senate bill proposed by the Gang of Eight would combine border security, employer accountability, legal immigration improvements and a path to citizenship. The interplay of created elements will create lines to get into for immigrants — both in sending countries and here in the United States that will reduce the incentive for people to risk their lives to come to America illegally. That’s the combination that will save lives.
The question now is whether Senator Cornyn is going to talk the talk or walk the walk.
