The Time Has Come For House GOP members Who Endorse Path to Citizenship to Become Cosponsors
In the middle of the latest D.C. crisis, immigration reform continues its relentless move forward. And, while pundits scramble to tally Republican votes for a “clean CR,” we already know the votes exist to pass reform in the House. Now, we have a vehicle for it.
Yesterday, immigration reform legislation was finally introduced in the House. The bill includes a path to citizenship and every provision in the bill has attracted votes from Democrats and Republicans. The legislation gives those House Republicans who say they support report the opportunity to prove it.
Said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
Immigration reform advocates have been building towards this moment. There is finally a bill with a path to citizenship in play in the House. The time is now for Republican House members who support real reform to step up. No excuses.
This is a perfect opportunity for California Republicans, including Representatives Jeff Denham, David Valadao and Devin Nunes, to co-sponsor this legislation. It should be a no-brainer for Florida Republicans such as Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. There are 26 Republicans who have publicly said they support immigration reform with a path to citizenship. It’s time to translate rhetoric into action.
One thing should be clear to House Republicans: Our movement is relentless. This weekend, activists will be holding over 160 rallies around the country in over 40 states. The pressure will only continue to grow, as will our political power.
