Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is at it again—apparently making up Texas friends with property overrun by border crossers.
During an appearance on a Texas radio show this morning, Cornyn claimed that people all over the world are now crossing the border through Texas and that any immigration reform that Congress passes this year must invest in border security.
As Cornyn said during an interview on KSEV (courtesy of Igor Volsky at Think Progress):
You gotta stop the flow of people coming across. My friends–and your friends, Edd [KSEV host Edd Hendee]–who have places in South Texas tell me…as a matter a fact a guy told me last night, he said we’ve got people coming across our place speaking Chinese, French and basically all of the languages in the world, coming through and across our southern border.
Senator Cornyn should really read our blog. We JUST wrote a piece on him promoting crazy border stories for which there is no background or proof whatsoever. Earlier this month, Cornyn tweeted about a friend who supposedly had 300 people crossing his property every night. The problem with his story? It was never substantiated, and despite repeated inquiries, Cornyn never gave the name of the “friend” or pointed out the border segment that was supposedly so overrun. We would think that if Cornyn were really so concerned about border security, he’d lead the Minutemen over to the breach himself, so as to keep out all those pesky French speakers.
Of course, as Think Progress notes, “the U.S. border is more secure than ever before. Border crossings are at 40-year low — falling to their lowest level since the Nixon administration — and net undocumented migration is at or below zero. Border agents patrol every single mile of the border every day and the vast majority of the border already meets one of Homeland Security’s highest standards of security.”
But hey, if John Cornyn said that “a guy” told him that the reverse is true…
