In a speech to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce this morning, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) made a compelling personal and political case for Republicans to embrace immigration reform.
The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
Rand Paul is a hot political property right now. So where does he spend his new-found political capital? On immigration reform. Following on the momentum of winning the CPAC Straw Poll and staging a filibuster that captured the nation’s attention, the Tea Party favorite chose to elevate his national profile by coming out strongly for a broad immigration overhaul. This speaks volumes about how far the debate on immigration reform and the GOP has come since the election.
On the heels of the RNC’s official embrace of immigration reform and rebuke of ‘self-deportation,’ Senator Paul’s speech is the latest in a near-daily series of breakthroughs in conservative circles and on the Republican side of the aisle that underscore why 2013 will be the year that long overdue immigration reform passes Congress.
