Donald Trump has made attacking immigrants the central tenet of his presidential campaign and his presidency. Yesterday, he released an anti-immigrant ad which is yet another direct attack on the Latino community. The ad makes it clear in the most irresponsible and worrying way that his administration will do whatever it takes in order to ensure its absolute political dominance.
The video is another smear of our community with its focus on criminals. It includes video from the migrant caravan, keeping with Trump’s rhetoric calling it an “invasion,” implying that all immigrants who try to come to this country are criminals, and that Latinos who are already here are murderers. This is false, unacceptable, and shameful.
This video is particularly dangerous in the wake of last week’s massacre of 11 at a Pittsburgh synagogue. At Vox, Dara Lind reported that the shooter was “blaming Jews in America for bringing in an invasion of non-white immigrants who would slaughter the white race.” In other words, he was spurred to take that heinous action, in part, by Trump’s rhetoric on the caravan. Yet, Trump and his allies continue to stir up hysteria with falsehoods and lies. As Greg Sargent wrote at the Washington Post today, “President Trump knows full well that his rhetoric and conspiracy theories are putting people’s lives in danger — and in one case might have already helped incite mass murder — yet he continues to push them anyway.”
Yes, that is particularly true when it comes to Trump’s attacks on minorities. It is another of the many slurs and lies that Donald Trump and the extremists on the right have been using for their campaigns, particularly in the last few months. At America’s Voice, we created Divide and Distract 2018, which is a database of anti-immigrant ads Republicans have been using during this election season. Those ads have been created by candidates, Republican party committees, and GOP superPACs.
Yesterday, in response to the latest GOP ads, our Executive Director Frank Sharry said, “Republicans are following their dear leader down the dark path of mendacity, racism and blood-and-soil nationalism. Not only do we have a president that knows no shame, we have a political party that knows no bounds.” And, that was before we saw Trump’s latest video. This attack on our communities cannot be overlooked. It’s dangerous and we should never accept the disrespect, unfounded accusations, and hatred.
This must stop and the only way to do it is by going out to vote for candidates that represent the true values of America and standing up to the hate.

Donald Trump ha empleado el ataque a inmigrantes como el punto central de su campaña presidencial y su presidencia. Esto debe detenerse y la única forma de hacerlo es salir a votar por candidatos que representan los verdaderos valores de los Estados Unidos y hacer frente al odio.
