It’s been a big week in immigration, with former Florida Governor Jeb Bush first coming out against citizenship in immigration reform legislation–then being forced to walk back to his old, pro-citizenship position. It goes to show how far the debate has come in such a short amount of time, that citizenship is now a default position–and anyone who thinks otherwise is rusty, out-of-date, and out of touch.
As our Executive Director, Frank Sharry says in this video recapping this week’s events in immigration, Jeb Bush “got into a heap of trouble” because he didn’t realize that “a path to citizenship is now the centerpiece of reform.”
As Frank said, “it’s really essential if we’re going to get something done that’s going to include and treat equally, 11 million people who deserve to be recognized by American society as Americans.”
