On this week’s episode of our podcast “A is for America”, we spoke with our own Adriana Ruggiero, Viri Vidal, and Mario Carrillo — America’s Voice state directors for California, Nevada, and Texas, respectively — about what’s going on in this last stretch of the 2018 midterm elections. They talked about what’s going with voter turnout, the organizations mobilizing new American voters, and how local campaigns are looking in the final two weeks of this cycle.

This week, states like Texas posted huge early voting numbers, with several counties and big cities seeing record turnout. Republicans continued to try and divide and distract voters through anti-immigrant ads that demonize whole groups of people, even as commentators like Matt Barreto and Greg Sargent argued that such ugly tactics wouldn’t work. Donald Trump has been using the migrant caravan to scare voters, even though the migrants remain more than a thousand miles away, aren’t a threat, and should be treated with a compassionate response. Finally, Trump floated the idea of closing the border completely to asylum seekers — a violation of U.S. and international law — which our Executive Director Frank Sharry called a “stunt that will quickly be blocked in the courts.”

“A is for America” is a podcast which tells the stories from the front lines of a changing America. Each week, we’ll be talking to advocates and experts working in immigration reform, immigrants’ rights, immigration politics, and the forefront of what it means to be a new American. Tune in next week for more.
