According to McClatchy and The Washington Post, whose reports would be consistent with this Administration’s shameful track record, the Trump Administration has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for yet another country in the throes of unrest and chaos. This time the country is Honduras, a country plagued by violence, social turmoil, and recurring natural disasters that left over 57,000 Hondurans to seek refuge in the U.S. through TPS.
TPS holders are among the most heavily vetted immigrants in the U.S. and are contributing, tax paying members of American society. The program’s cancellation will, over time, force 57,000 Hondurans back to a country that is in no condition to receive them. This decision is another in a series of TPS terminations that puts some 300,000 legal immigrants with deep roots and significant equities on a path to deportation.
Frank Sharry, Executive Director at America’s Voice Education Fund, said,
“The Administration’s decision to end TPS for Honduras is heartless and malicious. Honduran TPS holders have called the U.S. home for decades, and they have made enormous contributions to this nation as workers, small business owners, homeowners, parents of U.S. citizens and community members. It is unwise and un-American to callously force them back to Honduras. We are calling on Congress to pass legislation to keep Honduran TPS holders in the U.S. and to create a path to a permanent solution for TPS holders deeply rooted in American communities.”
