Frank Sharry: “The only bad actors that should be separated from these kids are the federal officials who cruelly and coldly caused this crisis”
The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, in response to reports that the federal government is deciding which children are “eligible” for reunification with their parents. As Wall Street Journal’s Alicia Caldwell reports, “of the 1,606 children who are eligible to rejoin their parents, 848 specifically have been cleared by the government for reunification. Meanwhile, 908 children separated from their families at the border are “either not eligible, or not yet known to be eligible, for reunification.”
The administration that ripped children from their parents’ arms is now making unilateral decisions about which parents deserve to get their children back? What equips the administration that kidnapped some 3,000 kids and continues to subject them to physical, psychological and sexual abuse to suddenly decide what is in the best interests of these children? Outrageous and unacceptable.
Trump, Nielsen, and their accomplices shouldn’t be allowed to determine which families are reunited; they should be facing censure and perhaps criminal charges. Kids belong with their parents. Full stop. If there are exceptional circumstances that warrant a review, then state family courts are the place to go to determine something as serious as whether to keep a child apart from a parent.
The only bad actors that should be separated from these kids are the federal officials who cruelly and coldly caused this crisis.
