12 days and counting, and it seems that the American people realize the absurdity of Trump’s border wall fight. A late December Reuters/Ipsos poll of 2,440 adults nationwide makes clear that Americans are overwhelmingly opposed to shutting down the government over the unpopular border wall and hold President Trump responsible for the ongoing shutdown.

Among the key findings in the poll, which was released on December 27, 2018:

  • The shutdown over the border wall is incredibly unpopular: Only 25 percent of Americans said they supported Trump shutting down the government over a border wall.
  • The border wall itself remains unpopular: Only 35 percent said they supported including money for the border wall in a congressional spending bill.
  • Americans blame Trump for the shutdown: A plurality of 47 percent of respondents hold President Trump responsible for the government shutdown, while an additional seven percent blame congressional Republicans (so a combined majority of 54 percent blame either the Republican president or congressional GOP). Meanwhile, 33 percent blame congressional Democrats for the shutdown.
