Frank Sharry: “Democrats want to build back better. Republicans want to tear down Democrats…Blow past the rightwing noise machine and get it done, Democrats.”
Yesterday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told the truth. He declared, “100% of my focus is on stopping this new administration.” Earlier, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), who is the GOP leader in bipartisan discussions, shut the door on bipartisan immigration reform. He told the New York Times, “Before we can do anything meaningful on immigration, we’re going to have to deal with the current crisis at the border.”
Their strategy could not be clearer: Senate Republicans will engage in bipartisan discussions to run the clock on Biden and the Democrats before pulling out and blaming Democrats. They voted against COVID relief. They oppose taxes on their donors. They want to define down infrastructure such that we build a few things and ignore our people. They want to pretend to care about immigration in hopes of peeling off some centrist Democrats.
According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice,
The multiracial majority of Americans elected President Biden and the Democrats to go big, go now and deliver change. Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn and elected Republicans are determined to slam the door in the face of progress.
By saying the quiet part out loud, the GOP reveals their plan is to engage in performative bipartisanship in order to wage partisan war on Biden. Democrats want to build back better. Republicans want to tear down Democrats.
It’s increasingly obvious. Democrats need to use every ounce of their power to go big and deliver change – on COVID, on jobs, on racial justice, on climate change, and yes, on immigration reform. Blow past the rightwing noise machine and get it done, Democrats.
