Austin, TX – Today, the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals released its ruling on Senate Bill 4 (“SB4”) to vacate most of Judge Orlando Garcia’s preliminary injunction on the bill.

The panel’s decision means that certain provisions of SB4, the anti-immigrant and discriminatory law, will go into effect today. Importantly, today’s ruling did reiterate that the implementation of SB4 could expose local jurisdictions to constitutional violations.

Mario Carrillo, Director of America’s Voice Texas, said:

Today’s ruling is disappointing but unsurprising. It is now more important than ever for city officials statewide to recommit to protecting immigrants and doing all in their power to ensure that our community does not become the target of terrorizing enforcement. Despite SB4 and this ruling, we must all further our work to ensure that Texas remains a welcoming to state to all, regardless of one’s immigration status. We will continue to fight back against policies and laws that attack our civil rights and go against the founding ideals of our state and our country.
