America’s Voice Responds to Speaker Boehner on Immigration – Will House GOP or President Obama Take Action First?
In response to Speaker of the House John Boehner’s comments on immigration reform today, Lynn Tramonte, Deputy Director of America’s Voice, issued the following statement:
Just one week after issuing their standards for immigration reform, the House Republicans are already seeking to lower expectations about passing legislation this year and testing out excuses.
Republicans need to realize this isn’t about Obama (who is already deporting immigrants in record numbers, with his 2 millionth deportation set to occur shortly). It’s about them. Do they want their only immigration vote this Congress to be Steve King’s amendment to end DACA and subject DREAMers to deportation? Do they want their vulnerable House members in Latino and immigrant-heavy districts to lose in 2014? Do they want to enter the 2016 election cycle, which is already starting, with the immigration issue unresolved and their Party to blame?
While we don’t know what John Boehner’s real intentions are regarding immigration legislation in the months ahead, we do know this: a major, positive change in immigration policy is coming soon. If the House doesn’t act, the President will have no choice but to use his executive authority. The question is, will the House Republicans step up and be part of the solution, or leave it all to President Obama and the Democrats to get the credit?
