This year marked the beginning of the Trump presidency, and while the new Administration spent much of the year stymied by legislative priorities, Donald Trump has been able to remake the US immigration system in alarming and destructive ways. In his first year alone, between mass deporting immigrant mothers and fathers to implementing multiple Muslim bans to cancelling temporary protected status (TPS) for many immigrants to rescinding DACA, Trump has made large strides toward permanently changing US demographics and the imprint of immigrants on American life for the long run.
But that hasn’t been the whole story of 2017. This year, the resistance fought back against Trump and his Administration every step of the way, and Dreamers and immigration advocates were no exception. This year, the immigration reform movement was more creative than ever, pulling out every stop possible in campaigns to stop deportations, protect TPS, pass the Dream Act, and more. And we’re not finished yet: Dreamers and advocates have vowed to keep pushing in 2018 for the Dream Act and for immigrants’ rights, and to hold members of Congress accountable in next year’s elections.
