The Question Isn’t Just Whether Trump is Fit to Be President, It’s Whether He Is President
By now, everyone is well aware that Donald J. Trump is a racist. His remarks yesterday about Africa, Haiti, and El Salvador are just the latest, and perhaps one of the most blatant, examples of this. The media coverage has been swift and intense, as it should be and promises to continue into the weekend.
However, while the world is focused on his racist remarks, Trump is getting away with another crime. He’s denigrating the bipartisan compromise legislators put forward on Dream Act-plus, despite the fact that it exceeded his stated requirements. Here’s how it went down:
On Tuesday, in his bipartisan meeting with Members of Congress, Trump said:
- “I’ll sign whatever immigration bill [Congress sends] me.”
- “You guys are going to have to come up with a solution [for Dreamers] and I’m going to sign that solution.”
- “I think my positions are going to be what the people in this room come up with. If they come to me with things I’m not in love with, I’m going to do it. Because I respect them.”
Of course, that happened when Trump was at the head of the table. When Stephen Miller was able to take back the Oval Office, the White House issued an official statement that said: “During the closed-door portion of the meeting, [the President and a bipartisan group of legislators] reached an agreement to negotiate legislation that accomplishes critically needed reforms in four high-priority areas: border security, chain migration, the visa lottery, and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.”
On Thursday, when Sens. Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) brought President Trump a package that addressed those four issues, with tough compromises made all around, Trump was prepped and ready for them. He did what Stephen Miller wanted. He rejected the deal.

There is an ongoing debate about whether President Trump is fit to be President. Another question is whether Trump is actually the president? When it comes to immigration, Stephen Miller is clearly calling the shots. Miller made the President denounce a deal that was tailor-made to meet his stated requirements. Miller is moving the goalposts and rejecting bipartisan work done in good faith because the very last thing he wants is for the President to sign a bill stabilizing the status of Dreamers. Trump is not only a racist, he’s a weak leader who is letting his staff push him around.
