The following is a statement from Pili Tobar, Deputy Director of America’s Voice, regarding Stephen Miller and the administration’s new proposed rule to evict 55,000 U.S. citizen and legal resident children from public housing just because they live in a mixed-status household:
Trump, Stephen Miller, and Co. are hellbent on resurrecting last summer’s inhumane and disastrous family separation in whatever way they can.
While last summer’s disastrous family separation policy and the administration’s ‘Sophie’s choice’ for asylum seeking parents — the ‘choice’ between family separation or indefinite family detention — apply to foreign nationals, now Trump, Stephen Miller and Co. are turning to U.S. citizen and lawful permanent resident children just because they are part of mixed status families. This new HUD proposal would force undocumented parents to ‘choose’ between family separation in order to keep a roof over their children’s heads or eviction and, possibly, homelessness to stay together as a family. And in many cases, there wouldn’t even be a ‘choice,’ if the only parent available to sign a lease is undocumented.
This rule is nothing more than an expansion of the cruel and punitive family separation policy, except now it’ll apply to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents – an unprecedented action.
First they went after immigrant families seeking safety at the border, and we spoke out. Now, they are going after U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, just because they are part of mixed status families. We must speak out. But, who’s next?
