Today, the Trump Administration announced it would terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 9,000 Nepali TPS holders, subjecting hardworking, tax-paying, and integral contributors to the fabric of our nation to deportation.
According to Pili Tobar, Managing Director of America’s Voice:
This Administration’s motion today to terminate TPS for Nepal marks the fifth in a string of heartless decisions that have put over 300,000 immigrants on the path to deportation. While we are disheartened, we are not surprised.
TPS has allowed for 9,000 Nepali immigrants to flee a country still reeling from the devastating impacts of a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake in June 2015, displacing millions and destroying approximately 750,000 homes.
TPS has allowed Nepali immigrants to legally work in critical industries — Nepali TPS holders are our healthcare workers, our domestic workers, and they care for our children — but above all else, they are our neighbors.
Today’s decision marks the fifth, but – given the characteristic cruelty of this Administration’s treatment of TPS and Dreamers alike – likely not the final tally mark in Trump’s heinous and coordinated attack on immigrants.
