Countdown to GOP Irrelevancy Begins: 50 Days Until Party Falls Off the Demographic Cliff

As House Republicans Stall Immigration Reform, America’s Voice Website Starts Countdown Clock

As we have been saying for months, House Republicans have been stalling immigration reform.  This not only hurts the economy and the country, it threatens the GOP future.  Despite the desperate need for the GOP to repair its image with Latino, Asian-American and immigrant voters in the wake of the 2012 elections, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) seems incapable of overcoming resistance from the Rep. Steve King (R-IA) caucus.

Well, as House Republicans continue their march off the “demographic cliff,” America’s Voice offers up a new website – www.gopcliff.com – that depicts the GOP’s bleak future should they continue to block immigration reform

Longtime immigration reform champion Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) told Republicans last month, they have until the 4th of July Congressional recess to act.  A number of immigration reform advocates have joined in the call.  What it means is that there are 50 days left until their window of opportunity closes.

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

The moment of truth is at hand, and the political consequences for the GOP are clear.  Without taking action on reform over the next 50 days, Republicans will cede the initiative to President Obama, who has already demonstrated his willingness to use his executive authority on immigration.  In 2015 immigration reform will once again become fodder for a fierce intra-party battle in the GOP race for the White House, leaving chances for enacting immigration reform somewhere between slim and none.  In 2016 the GOP will face growing numbers of Latino, Asian-American and immigrant voters as the party that blocked the best chance to pass immigration reform in a generation.  By 2017, a White House and Congress dominated by Democrats will pass immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship, and by 2020 the GOP will be a fading force in our national politics.

It’s now or never for the GOP in the House. Unless Speaker Boehner and the rest of House Leadership stand up to the Steve King caucus in the coming weeks, the GOP fall will be long and deep.  Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
