Frank Sharry Says Trump Address to Congress is “Scorched Earth Xenophobia”
The following is a statement by Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, in response to the Address to the Congress by President Donald Trump:
Press reports that Trump might embrace comprehensive immigration reform turned out to be a cruel hoax.
Instead of reaching to the middle, he moved even farther right. He offered nothing but enforcement and deportations for undocumented immigrants, and then called for deep cuts in family reunification under our legal immigration system. Let’s be clear: a shift away from family immigration to ‘merit-based’ immigration is code for deep cuts in family legal immigration.
This adds up to an unprecedented attack on immigrants here, and a nativist attack on the ability of US citizens to sponsor their close family members legally. On top of these policy proposals, Trump continues to tag immigrants as criminals, a charge as false as it is cruel.
Trump isn’t making a sincere attempt at bipartisan reform, he’s embracing a cynical strategy of scorched-earth xenophobia.

Compartimos enseguida un comunicado de Frank Sharry, Director Ejecutivo de America’s Voice, en respuesta al discurso del presidente Donald Trump ante el Congreso:
Los informes de prensa en el sentido de que Trump podría adoptar una reforma migratoria integral podrían ser un cruel engaño.
En lugar de llegar a la parte media, se fue incluso mucho más allá de la extrema derecha. No ofreció nada, más que la aplicación de la ley y deportaciones para inmigrantes indocumentados, y pidió además profundos recortes a la reunificación familiar, con base en nuestro sistema legal de inmigración. Seamos claros: un cambio de inmigración por familia a uno ‘con base en méritos’ significa profundos recortes en la inmigración legal familiar.
Esto se suma a un ataque sin precedentes en contra de los inmigrantes, así como un ataque nativista a la posibilidad de que ciudadanos estadounidenses patrocinen a sus familiares cercanos legalmente. Como si esto fuera poco, Trump sigue tipificando a los inmigrantes como delincuentes, una acusación tan falsa como cruel.
Trump no está haciendo un sincero intento por lograr una reforma bipartidista, sino que está adoptando una estrategia cínica de xenofobia implacable.
