Today, the White House rolled out a new anti-immigrant proposal which would use the fact that Dreamers need protection from deportation in order to pass a slate of nativist, anti-immigrant measures that would change U.S. demographics for the long run. The proposal, spearheaded by senior policy “adviser” Stephen Miller, would slash legal immigration, gut family migration, expand Trump’s deportation force, build a useless border wall, and much more.
As advocates and analysts on Twitter are noting, the proposal is dead on arrival because it makes zero economic sense and would slash immigration by an unprecedented amount. Dreamers don’t want to trade protections for themselves for the persecution of their families and friends. Advocates are calling the proposal a “white nationalist wish list.” And many Republicans apparently don’t like it, either.
