Yesterday, on Human Rights Day, 70 activists with the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor joined members of the Bakersfield Hispanic Chamber of Commerce outside GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)’s Bakersfield office, to once again demand that their Representative help move immigration reform forward. As expected, McCarthy’s office was locked, and the constituents were prevented from entering for the 8th day in a row.
Maria Elena Durazo, Chair of the National AFL-CIO Immigration Reform Committee, delivered a fiery speech on how McCarthy’s inaction would only fuel the movement’s drive for immigration reform. After the press conference, the crowd attempted to deliver photographs of small businesses with signs in their windows support immigration reform and a path to citizenship. The group began taping the pictures to the Congressman’s door and windows, chanting “knock knock knock, let us in!” But as they have done for the last 8 days, McCarthy’s staff refused all deliveries and retreated into the depths of the office rather than engaging with the advocates.
