The following is a press release about a petition delivery in Rep. Blake Farenthold’s (R-TX) district yesterday:
In Texas today, almost 50 immigration reform activists from TexasRITA, LULAC, Mi Familia Vota and other groups gathered at Rep. Blake Farenthold’s (R-TX) Corpus Christi office to deliver 10,000 petitions asking the Congressman to support immigration reform and a path to citizenship.
Lead by DREAMers and other local immigration advocates representing Rep. Farenthold’s constituents, the group was met by an anti-immigrant crowd assembled by the Congressman’s reelection campaign that shouted and used intimidation tactics to dissuade the group.
Miguel Porfirio, a DREAMer and DACA recipient, who led the petition delivery said, “Why is Congressman Farenthold afraid of our families, of our stories? Why did he feel like he had to turn out a group of his supporters to scare us? Why is he afraid of the 10,000 constituents who signed the petition? We came to deliver that petition and talk about immigration reform in a positive way. We expect the same respect and dialogue that the Congressman would offer to any of his other constituents.”
Groups in Texas and across the country will not be deterred by the loud, but few, extremists. The American people and voters along the Gulf community support immigration reform with a path to citizenship. There is a bipartisan majority in the House for immigration reform, and the constituents of Rep. Farenthold will continue to remind him that they support a path to citizenship, and they will be voting.
