Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) turned a Mitt Romney debate line around on its head today with a speech on the House floor denouncing the idea that Arizona and its SB 1070 anti-immigrant law could be “a model” for the nation.
What Arizona is a model for, Gutierrez said, “is how to make decent people suffer.”
“Maybe Mitt Romney and I have a different idea of what ‘model’ means,” Gutierrez allowed. “Maybe he thinks Bernie Madoff is a ‘model’ investment banker. But I think ‘model’ means something you can be proud of. Something that makes America better.”
Neither Arizona nor SB 1070, Gutierrez explained, fit that description.
