Washington, DC – Among the key takeaways in the new Quinnipiac poll:
- 88% of Americans, and 79% of Republicans, support efforts to allow Dreamers to stay in this country and eventually apply for either citizenship or legal status short of citizenship.
- 82% of Americans, including 69% of Republicans, back citizenship for Dreamers.
- Only 10% of Americans and 18% of Republicans support removing Dreamers from the country.
The poll also included several other relevant immigration findings, including:
- By a 60-37% margin, Americans oppose “building a wall along the border with Mexico.”
- A combined 77% of Americans support either citizenship (68%) or legalization (9%) for undocumented immigrants in the U.S..
- Only 19% support requiring undocumented immigrants to leave the U.S.
- Among Republicans, 59% support either citizenship (49%) or legalization (10%) for undocumented immigrants; 37% back the deportation option.
The new Quinnipiac University poll is the latest in a string of recent national polls to find overwhelming support from Americans, including Republicans, for Dreamers and for all undocumented immigrants. A range of other national polling finds consistent and overwhelming support for Dreamers, including among Republicans. While exact question wording varies, the results are broadly consistent:
CBS News poll: By an 87-10% margin, Americans back efforts to allow Dreamers to stay in the U.S., including by a 79-16% margin among Republicans (Sept. 2017).
Washington Post/ABC News poll: 86% of Americans, including 75% of Republicans, back an approach allowing Dreamers to stay in the U.S. (Sept. 2017).
CNN poll: By an 82-14% margin overall, and a 74-21% margin among Republicans, Americans back an approach allowing Dreamers to stay in the U.S. and ensure that they are not exposed to deportation (Sept. 2017).
Harvard-Harris poll: 77% of Americans, including 66% of Republicans, back citizenship for Dreamers (Sept. 2017).
Politico/Morning Consult poll: 73% of Americans, including 70% of Republicans, support either citizenship or legalization for Dreamers (Sept. 2017).
Latino Decisions poll: Latino voters nationwide want Congress to pass the Dream Act with a path to citizenship by a 91-9% margin, including 83-17% among Latino Republicans (Sept. 2017).

This is the mainstream, near-universal view of all voters, including Republicans. The notion that this is a tough issue for Congress or for Republicans is a manufactured narrative concocted by nativist activists who find themselves increasingly isolated. It’s time to do what’s right, which also happens to be what’s popular. Enact a clean bipartisan Dream Act now.”
