In a strong show of unity, Senate Democrats joined together and sent a letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) today calling on him to pass a long-term Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill without ideologically-driven riders. Nevertheless, Senator McConnell announced that the Senate will move to the House-passed DHS bill – with amendments that strip DACA from Dreamers and prevents eligible parents of American children to apply for relief.
Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice said in response:
So much for the era of responsible governance. It’s now clear that Republicans don’t have the votes to block President Obama’s immigration policy changes. And yet GOP leadership in both chambers insists on destabilizing the agency responsible for homeland security at a time of heightened concern over terrorism. Why? Because they want to confront the President over his recently-announced executive actions, even though they are bound to lose. Wow.
We salute the Democrats for standing strong. We look forward to the Republicans backing off. In the meantime, the only losers are the American people who expected better and the GOP which couldn’t look worse.
