The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
“What a depressing and revealing spectacle in the U.S. Senate today.
Before Republicans filibustered and defeated a bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, and before the Senate voted on a bill related to our number one international rival, China, Republicans – led by Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) – demagogued immigration and demanded yet another losing vote over the silly border wall.
This speaks volumes about today’s GOP. Evidently, Republicans believe the greater security threat to America are women and children who have fled their countries and seek safety at our southern border than the threat of armed white supremacist mobs attacking the Capitol after a free and fair election or the challenges posed by our chief competitor, China.
It’s a reminder that the Trumpified Republican Party is incapable of governing responsibly, obsessed with demonizing immigrants and refugees, and uninterested in extending and defending our democracy.
All of this clarifies the choices for Democrats. They need to be clear eyed about the bad faith Republican Party. They need to recognize that the multiracial majority of Americans who elected Democrats wants progress. And they need to use every ounce of their power to ensure the American experiment survives the next two election cycles.”
