Reps. Hurd, Barton, and Flores: Delay on Dream Act Means Deportation of Dreamers

With time running out, Texas Members of Congress must stand by commitment to protecting Dreamers

Austin, TX – With one week remaining in this year’s legislative calendar, the lives of millions of Dreamers remain in limbo. Dreamers in Texas and across the country have been mobilizing, making calls, and participating in civil disobedience to push Congress to pass a Dream Act before the end of the year.

Texas Republican Congressmen Will Hurd (TX-23), Joe Barton (TX-06), and Bill Flores (TX-17) are among the 34 Republicans to sign a letter to Paul Ryan urging him to add a legislative solution for Dreamers before the end of year. Republicans in Texas must understand that a vote for a spending bill without a Dream Act is a vote to deport Dreamers.

More than 80% of the public, including two-thirds of Republicans, support Dreamers and efforts to keep them here in America. A solid majority of members of Congress in both chambers would vote for a Dreamer solution if given the chance.

Mario Carrillo, State Director of America’s Voice Texas said:

We’re down to the wire and the future of Dreamers still hangs in the balance. In Texas, there are more than 124,000 Dreamers who are counting on Congress to do the right thing and pass a Dream Act now, not next year. Thousands of Dreamers have already lost their DACA status, and tens of thousands are set to lose it in the weeks on the months to come. Congress must act now. Texans will not forget who stood in the way of the future of millions of Dreamers.
