Republicans Can’t Get Over Obsession with Deporting DREAMers and their Families
Today, for the second time in two days, Senate Republicans failed to invoke cloture on a House-passed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill that also guts President Obama’s executive actions, ends the DACA program for DREAMers, and maximizes the deportation of immigrants firmly settled in America.
Following is a statement from Lynn Tramonte, Deputy Director of America’s Voice:
It should be obvious to any lawmaker that funding the Department of Homeland Security is a national priority. Yet, Republicans in the House and Senate continue to manufacture a funding crisis as a way to promote policies that maximize the deportation of DREAMers and others with roots in America.
In a strong showing of unity, Democrats in both chambers continue to stand up to Republicans’ bullying and obsession. They have denounced Republicans’ political games, and followed their words with resolute action. That is the type of leadership our nation deserves and expects from elected officials.
It’s crystal clear that the Senate will not move forward with the House-passed bill—the bill blessed by Rep. Steve King (R-IA) and the restrictionist wing of the Republican conference. That bill will not become law, despite Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) futile efforts to schedule more votes on the same bill and hope for a different outcome. McConnell should move on, and take up a clean DHS funding bill that stabilizes this critical department without politicizing it.
Democrats are united around the best interests of our nation. It’s time for Republicans to catch up.
