Washington, DC – In response to the news that the Biden Administration will extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Cameroonians, the following is a statement from Douglas Rivlin, Director of Communication for America’s Voice:
“TPS is beneficial to both affected families and the United States’ interests, advancing stability, bolstering our economy, and upholding our values. We commend the Biden administration for today’s announcement on Cameroon, and we thank and celebrate with the tireless array of advocates and affected community members whose stories and commitment helped make today’s news a reality.
Conflict and country conditions in Cameroon make it such that deporting individuals or families there would be unsafe for them, destabilizing for the country and against the interests of the U.S., so redesignation is the correct choice, and one that should be applied to other countries.
While some have expressed worry that TPS designation or redesignation announcements will incentivize more individuals to migrate to the U.S., an important new CNN op-ed from Ben Helms, David Leblang, and Tom Jawetz marshals data to show why that fear is misplaced – underscoring that TPS is an important tool that President Biden should continue to rely on to advance both order and justice.”
