In response to reports that President Trump will raid an additional $3.8 billion from the Pentagon to fund border wall construction, the following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
Just in time to commemorate the 1-year anniversary of his fake national emergency declaration, a lawless President Trump is raiding billions more from funds appropriated by Congress to support the military to further his border wall obsession.
The tab for American taxpayers is now more than $20 billion for an unpopular and ineffective wall that the President promised Mexico would pay for.
Who cares about the separation of powers or the military’s needs? Screw the property rights of private landowners and the sacred land of natives. And pay no attention that the wall needs to be left open for months at a time, can be cut through with a cheap saw, can be climbed over in matter of minutes, and can be blown over by a stiff breeze. What clearly matters to this president is standing before his rally-going base to aid his reelection campaign.
Together with Trump’s shakedown of New York and his targeted retribution against other pro-immigrant jurisdictions, an emboldened and vindictive President Trump is hellbent on taking our democracy into authoritarianism in the service of hanging onto power.
