Today, Yazmin Juarez came to Congress to testify before the House Oversight Subcommittee about the horrible detention conditions that led to the tragic death of her young daughter earlier this year.
Yazmin’s and her daughter, Mariee, had made the journey across the border to seek asylum, a trip that Mariee appeared healthy throughout. After they were processed at the border and put into immigration detention, Mariee contracted a respiratory infection that was not taken seriously by agents at the detention center, who only gave her ice cream in an attempt to make her fever go away. Mariee died, and Yazmin is now suing one of the contractors operating the Dilley, Texas detention facility.
Today, Yazmin bravely told her story to horrified members of Congress and advocates demanding #JusticeForMariee. As she said, “I’m here today because I don’t want another little angel to suffer like my Mariee.”
