In an editorial board interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Cornyn says he broke with Trump on the border wall, but kept opposition private. Of course, Cornyn’s voting record and public statements show the exact opposite, and this willful misrepresentation of his own actual immigration record is classic Cornyn cowardice in his inability to stand up to Trump. It echoes his recent effort to pretend he supports Dreamers when he issued a Spanish language ad that he “strongly supports legalization for Dreamers,” despite voting against bipartisan proposals to secure legal status for Dreamers in 2006, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2018.
Naturally, many were outraged by this latest, embarrassing attempt for Cornyn to try to save his campaign after multiple polls have showed him failing on immigration policy and losing his once secure lead. The internet’s response showed no mercy on this flop and did not disappoint in calling out this hypocrisy.
Here are our favorite reactions:
.@JohnCornyn publicly supported and voted for Donald Trump's plan to steal money from our troops to pay for his useless border wall. Now today he says he privately opposed it.
Either John Cornyn's a coward — or he's a liar. https://t.co/nQruUsqI11

John Cornyn has spent four years kissing Trump’s ring while Texans have suffered.
His cowardice has cost lives and hurt Texans. He must be defeated. https://t.co/JXASB0ozfu

We now have a John Cornyn classic. He's claiming he broke with Trump on the border wall and the deficit but wait for it: he kept his opposition private, yep he broke with him in private! Really John? How convenient!

Republican Sen. John Cornyn wants credit for privately opposing Trump on the deficit and border wall. Truly, what good does private opposition do? Especially with this president, who only responds to public opposition. The media should not reward. https://t.co/GVqth8ua6V

I do not give a single chicken-fried fuck about whether @JohnCornyn privately opposed Trump.
Cornyn is not a private citizen. He has been a member of the U.S. Senate, representing me and others, since 2002. His votes matter to me. His private concerns do not.

They have started already! Is #prehabilitation a word?
Example, this whopper of a lie from #Texas #Senate candidate @JohnCornyn https://t.co/DB1nfBt8Y4#Immigration #Resist #HomeIsHere

This is the opposite of integrity and leadership. Your job is to represent Texas, not to suck up to Trump. You failed Texas @JohnCornyn #CountryOverParty https://t.co/eIZM3ij1dB
