Members of Congress were back in their home districts for Thanksgiving recess last week, and for Dreamers and advocates, that meant another opportunity to tell their members of Congress to support the Dream Act.
In Colorado, advocates set up an empty Thanksgiving table to remind Congress what families and communities will look like if Dreamers and their parents are deported. In Connecticut, the Stamford community continued to rally around Miriam Martinez, a mother who faces deportation. In Florida, children wrote letters asking Congress to support legislation for immigrant youth. In New York, Dreamers staged a very public act of civil disobedience during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In Tennessee, advocates held a vigil for the Dream Act to draw attention to the more than a hundred DACA recipients losing status daily. In Texas, Virginia, and Washington, allies pressured Republican members of Congress to do the right thing. And in Wisconsin, a mobile billboard pressured Speaker Paul Ryan to allow the Dream Act to come up for a vote in the House.
