All year long, we’ve been fighting for real immigration reform that creates a path to citizenship for the 11 million. It’s easy to forget, though, that under current Obama immigration policies, families aren’t supposed to be separated and non-priority immigrants aren’t supposed to be deported. Current immigration enforcement policies, if they followed their own guidelines, could be more effective, more humane than they are right now. That’s why NILC released this document this month, entitled “What DHS Can Do Right Now” to ease our overly harsh immigration policies. Simply put, there are three things:
- Follow existing policies and promises.
- Ensure due process of law and fairness for noncitizens.
- Stop scapegoating and criminalizing noncitizens as “criminal aliens.
