During Mother’s Day yesterday, advocates in 24 cities across the nation took time out of their holiday to protest Trump’s family separation policy and reflect on all the mothers and children who are forced to be apart.
“Today is not a good day, because I think of all the mothers who are in detention,” said Ingrid, an immigrant who has lived in the U.S. for 19 years and who attended the rally in Washington, D.C. yesterday.
Small crowds of protesters showed up everywhere from Florida to Texas to New Hampshire and Minnesota. The event was organized by the Alliance for Family Reunification, Military Families for Families, Immigrant Justice Now and other coalition partners, some braving wind and rain to brandish signs with a #MotherOfExiles hashtag. The groups also asked allies to have conversations with friends and family members about family separation and detention, and what can be done to help stop them.

This Mother's Day it is time to start a conversation with our friends and family. We are going to expose what is happening in detention centers.

It was wet and it was cold, but that couldn't stop us from demanding an end to family separation and child detention. It's why we are a Brit Olam congregation. @TheRAC #MotherofExiles pic.twitter.com/dYm8OKE6xf

Like many moms, I will be celebrating #MothersDay with those I cherish tomorrow. There's also an opportunity in Dallas tomorrow to rally for detained immigrant moms. #MotherOfExiles #EndFamilyDetention @MothersDayRally @dallasdemocrats @indivisibletx24 pic.twitter.com/mrRVCo1fbb

The Trump administration's immigration practices are a moral failure of our government, inflicting deep trauma on already vulnerable children. We urge them to stop the use of our tax dollars for family separation and detention. #EndFamilyDetention #MothersDay #MotherofExiles pic.twitter.com/6yt8m3Csfc
