On Mother’s Day, Rallies Around Nation Protest Family Separation

During Mother’s Day yesterday, advocates in 24 cities across the nation took time out of their holiday to protest Trump’s family separation policy and reflect on all the mothers and children who are forced to be apart.

“Today is not a good day, because I think of all the mothers who are in detention,” said Ingrid, an immigrant who has lived in the U.S. for 19 years and who attended the rally in Washington, D.C. yesterday.

Small crowds of protesters showed up everywhere from Florida to Texas to New Hampshire and Minnesota. The event was organized by the Alliance for Family Reunification, Military Families for Families, Immigrant Justice Now and other coalition partners, some braving wind and rain to brandish signs with a #MotherOfExiles hashtag. The groups also asked allies to have conversations with friends and family members about family separation and detention, and what can be done to help stop them.
