As SCOTUS To Hear DAPA Lawsuit, “DAPA Dinners” A Reminder About What’s At Stake

The fight against the Republican lawsuit that is blocking DAPA and DACA+ is about to reach a new level.

On April 18, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments on the lawsuit blocking DAPA and DACA+, giving immigration advocates an opportunity to demonstrate that DAPA and DACA+ are beneficial for our country and for millions of immigrant families.

However, opponents of DAPA and DACA+ will also have an opportunity to speak in front of the Supreme Court, and they are ready to say anything in order to deny deportation relief for millions of hard-working immigrants — this is where DAPA Dinners come into play.

For the past couple of months, America’s Voice has been working with United We Dream Action, Center for Community Change Action, Fair Immigration Reform Movement, as well as state and local groups across the nation, on the “DAPA Dinners” campaign — events that provide an opportunity for DAPA-eligible families to share a meal and their story with their elected officials.

Congressional lawmakers and all Presidential candidates—both Republican and Democratic—have been invited to sit down with DAPA-eligible families. Lawmakers who have met with DAPA families over the past few months include Sen. Harry Reid, Sen. Richard Durbin, Rep. Bill Foster, Rep. Ruben Gallego, as well as 2016 Presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O’Malley.

Continuing to lift up the stories of DAPA-eligible families through a DAPA Dinner could really help in telling the Supreme Court and other observers how important DAPA and DACA+ are to our communities, and to demonstrate how immigrant families are just like any other American family.

That is why America’s Voice is committed to helping you invite your local elected official, and provide you with the resources to make your dinner a success.
