AVEF Responds to Sneak Attempt to Enact $1.6 Billion Funding for Costly and Unnecessary Border Wall

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives reportedly plans to sneak $1.6 billion in funding for Trump’s border wall into a “minibus” spending package this afternoon.

According to Politico’s Ted Hesson:

Why in a rule? Why not just amend the bill once it’s on the floor? Probably because the wall doesn’t have enough Republican support to pass there.

This morning Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer and Representatives Filemon Vela (D-TX), Luis V. Gutierrez (D-IL), Pete Aguilar (D-CA), Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), and Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) gathered to urge the GOP House to reconsider this underhanded maneuver.

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice Education Fund:

Donald Trump’s immigration policies aren’t popular, don’t protect our national security and don’t promote our ideals as a nation. Nowhere is this more apparent than his border wall – a proposal so unpopular and idiotic that the House Republicans have to sneak the funding past the post without a formal vote. This is nothing more than an attempt to swindle taxpayers to give the President a much-needed ‘win.’
