America’s Voice Responds to the Initial Senate Parliamentarian Ruling
The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice reacting to the Senate parliamentarian’s ruling on immigration:
This isn’t the beginning of the end, this is the end of the beginning. The Parliamentarian ruled on one approach and we believe she got it wrong. Senator Schumer has made it clear that ‘Senate Democrats have prepared alternate proposals and will be holding additional meetings with the Senate Parliamentarian in the coming days.’
The public supports immigration reform, the President supports immigration reform, and every Democrat in Congress supports immigration reform. The American people elected Democrats to enact their priorities. It’s time for all of us to bring every ounce of power we have to translate this support into a result.
With no disrespect to the role of the Parliamentarian, let’s be clear: this is a helluva way to run a democracy. An unelected lawyer stymies the hopes and futures of millions of immigrants, and blocks legislation backed by the majority party. It’s time to do better. It’s time to find a way.
