Douglas Rivlin: “TPS for Afghanistan is welcome news … President Biden should continue to use TPS to deliver important progress and protections, first for Cameroon and then for additional countries in Africa and Central America.”
Washington, DC – This morning, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the designation of Afghanistan for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. According to Ted Hesson of Reuters, the protections will apply to approximately 75,000 Afghans residing in the United States who entered on humanitarian parole or student, tourist, or employment visas. This will prevent their deportation to an unstable and war torn country.
The following is a statement from Douglas Rivlin, Director of Communication for America’s Voice:
TPS for Afghanistan is welcome news that moves us closer to fulfilling America’s moral obligation to our Afghan allies and upholding our best national traditions. The recognition that tens of thousands of Afghans in the United States are unable to safely return to their home country is exactly why TPS was created in the first place. The policy benefits Afghans directly, but also the American communities in which they live by giving Afghan communities greater stability, leading to greater self-sufficiency and economic opportunity.
Today’s designation, following recent TPS designations or redesignations for Ukraine, Sudan and South Sudan, underscores the fact that TPS and other executive actions are important ways President Biden can deliver on his promises, grant meaningful protections and advance both America’s interests and values.
President Biden should continue to use TPS to deliver important progress and protections, first for Cameroon and then for additional countries in Africa and Central America.
