Trump and Sessions’ Justice Department Considers Supporting Texas SB4,  “Show Me Your Papers” Bill

SB 4 will allow racial profiling and discrimination of Texas’ communities of color

Austin, TX – According to the Austin American-Statesman, the Trump and Sessions led Department of Justice yesterday indicated its intent to file a statement of interest and “asked to be involved in the court hearings next week on SB 4,” Texas’ anti-immigrant and unconstitutional law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott last month.

According to Austin City Councilman Greg Casar:

This is bigger than Texas. If Senate Bill 4 is allowed to go into effect, we can expect similar laws across the country. Abbott and Trump want immigrants and their families in our community to live in fear every day. There’s just one thing standing in the way: all of us.

According to Mario Carrillo, State Director of America’s Voice: Texas:

It’s no surprise that the Trump Administration, which has unleashed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Custom and Border Patrol (CBP) agents on immigrant communities across the country, would stand behind its best foot soldier, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, in the war against immigrants.

By signing SB4, Gov. Abbott is encouraging local law enforcement to racially discriminate against people of color in Texas, by forcing officers to ask about the immigration status of anyone they encounter. Our community will continue to fight back against this hateful and unconstitutional law, and we will continue to build an inclusive Texas.
