Yesterday, Senate Democrats voted down a partisan Mitch McConnell-led maneuver and bill in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The GOP proposal would have allowed for huge corporate bailouts with little accountability, not enough protections for all Americans, and nothing meaningful for hospitals and healthcare workers on the front lines.
In response to the Democrats insisting on a bipartisan process and a balanced bill, Sen. John Cornyn responded, as statesmen do, with a tweet: “blah blah blah”. This from the senior senator from Texas, who has made light of the outbreak by posting photos of him drinking a Corona beer and who has perpetuated President Trump’s racist response to COVID-19.
The following is a statement from Mario Carrillo, Texas-based Campaigns Manager of America’s Voice:
Sen. Cornyn has left behind millions of Texans for too long now, and instead of demonstrating the leadership this moment requires, Sen Cornyn gives us partisan politics and useless tweets. Instead of corporate bailouts paid out of slush funds controlled by Trump lackeys, Sen. Cornyn should be concerned about the lack of tests, the lack of emergency protective gear for front-line health workers, and the shortage of ventilators that will be needed as cases surge in Texas.
It is a tragedy that Sen. Cornyn is more interested in protecting and supporting the President than in protecting and supporting Texans. We have learned to expect the absence of leadership from Senator Cornyn, but it is no less shocking to see his actions and mockery in this moment of national crisis.
