Washington, DC — New polling from Reuters/Ipsos is more evidence that Republicans’ embrace of the mass deportation agenda is not just cruel and destructive, but politically toxic for the GOP. As the Reuters story, “Trump’s deportation push could cost Republicans in midterm elections, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds,” notes: “President Donald Trump’s aggressive campaign to deport immigrants could weigh on his Republican Party in November’s midterm congressional elections, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found.” Findings from the more than 4,500 sample national poll include:
- By a 52-42% margin, Americans said they were less likely to support a candidate who backs Trump’s approach to deportations versus more likely. This includes a 57-32% margin among independents.
- 53-40% overall disapproval of Trump’s immigration policy.
- Overwhelming support for balanced immigration solutions, including a path to legal status. As Reuters noted, “76% of respondents in the poll said unauthorized migrants who have jobs and no criminal record should have a way to gain legal status,” while 84% said it was important “to have secure borders” and 87% expressed support for the idea of “enforcing immigration laws.”
As Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice noted:
“A majority of Americans are rejecting the cruelty, chaos and violence of mass deportation. Instead, concerned Americans have for years called for real reform and accountability and an alternative vision that includes a pathway towards legal status for most immigrants- not a blank check from Congress for more cruelty and harm. Against the rising tide of public sentiment against their damaging agenda, President Trump, Stephen Miller and their congressional enablers continue ‘full steam ahead’ with their one million deportations quota, no matter the human, economic or political consequences.”
