New Polling Confirms Rejection of Mass Deportation by Americans; Ugly New Detention of Military Spouse Underscores Why

Washington, DC — Two newly released polls underscore that a majority of Americans, including Latinos, are rejecting the cruelty, chaos, and misplaced priorities of the Trump/Miller mass deportation agenda, while another horrific case of ICE detaining an active duty military spouse captures why Americans are recoiling.

The new polls, from Politico (conducted by Public First) and Somos Votantes (GSG Political), join the host of Latino polls we highlighted last week underscoring the broad-based rejection of mass deportation and support for real reform and accountability. See below for key findings and excerpts.

Meanwhile, the CBS News story, “Wife of active-duty U.S. Army sergeant detained by ICE in Texas at immigration appointment,” details how the wife of an active duty Army sergeant was detained by ICE recently, in this case after appearing at an immigration appointment in El Paso and despite the wife’s active work permit (see below for more troubling details).

According to Joanna Kuebler, Chief of Programs of America’s Voice:

“Poll after poll reveals a consistent story: Americans reject the cruelty, violence and misplaced priorities of mass deportation. The cost is too high. Voters know there is a better way, and it starts by insisting that Congress pass real, common sense reforms and accountability instead of offering a blank check for Miller’s anti-immigrant crusade.

Driving the polling is what Americans are seeing, hearing and experiencing every single day. Case in point: yet another military spouse targeted while attending a regular immigration appointment – and despite her work permit – is further evidence of the chaos, destruction and disruption left in the wake of mass deportation.”

Politico Poll

The newest installment of the Politico Poll (conducted by Public First) includes several reminders that the majority of Americans recognize the mass deportation agenda is going too far, is making us less safe and doesn’t need more funding from Congress (see full breakdown of questions and results here):

  • By a 58-22% margin, Americans say ICE and Border Patrol don’t need more funding from Congress, with 38% saying ICE and CBP have too much funding already; 20% say they already have the right amount of funding; and just 22% saying they need more funding.
  • By a 52-33% margin, Americans say the presence of ICE agents in U.S. cities is making them much more or somewhat more dangerous versus much less or somewhat less dangerous (33% say much more dangerous vs. 21% who say much less dangerous).
  • By a 51-11% margin, Americans say the mass deportation campaign has been too aggressive versus not aggressive enough, with another 26% saying it’s been about right.

Somos Votantes battleground state polling of Latino voters

New battleground state-specific polling of Latino voters released by Somos Votantes and conducted by GSG Political underscores that economic anxiety is Latino voters’ top concern at a time that the Trump White House and Republicans are prioritizing mass deportation above all (see detailed polling toplines and questions here). The new poll, of Latino voters in AV, GA, MI, NC, NM, NV, TX, and WI also finds overwhelming support for a proposed path to legal status for long-settled undocumented immigrants as well as ICE reforms and accountability:

  • By a 77-16% margin, Latino likely voters in those states are more likely to back a candidate who supports “providing a legal pathway for undocumented immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for years, have passed a background check, are paying taxes, and have no serious criminal record.”
  • By a 62-28% margin, Latino likely voters in those states are more likely to back a candidate who supports “reforming ICE to put stronger accountability and oversight measures in place.”

Find key excerpts from the CBS News story, “Wife of active-duty U.S. Army sergeant detained by ICE in Texas at immigration appointmentbelow:

“An active-duty U.S. Army sergeant who has served in the military for 27 years, including in Afghanistan, said he still does not ‘understand why’ his wife was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement last week in Texas.

In an interview with CBS News Sunday, Sgt. First Class Jose Serrano, 51, said his wife, Deisy Rivera Ortega, was arrested by ICE on April 14 during an appointment at an immigration office in El Paso.

Rivera Ortega, who married Serrano in 2022, has been in the U.S. for over a decade, since 2016. She was granted a legal protection in 2019 that prohibits her deportation to her native El Salvador, U.S. immigration court documents show.

…’I don’t really understand why, because she followed the rules of immigration by the T since day one,’ Serrano said, noting his wife had an active work permit at the time of her arrest.

‘I love the Army. (The) Army helped me out for almost 28 years. It’s not the Army, sir. It’s ICE,’ Serrano said later in the interview. ‘ICE is out of control right now, sir, taking away rights, as soldiers, that we have.’”
