Ohio Dreamers and Voters Call on Sen. Portman to Ensure Passage of the Dream Act
Cleveland, OH – On Thursday, October 5 at 12 pm ET, Indivisible CLE, DreamActivist Ohio, and the InterReligious Task Force on Central America will join Cleveland Jobs with Justice, Greater Cleveland Immigrant Support Network, America’s Voice: Ohio, and local Dreamers and advocates in a creative and symbolic action representing Ohio’s Dreamers and the voters who support them—and urging Senator Portman to put his weight behind passing the Dream Act.
The group will meet at the Free Stamp at noon, unveiling and then delivering personalized Dreamer figures, signed with the names of Ohio voters who support passing the Dream Act, to Senator Portman’s Cleveland office. Linked together “hand-to-hand,” the Dreamer figures will cover the length of 1.5 football fields.
After walking to the Federal Building and unfurling the Dreamer cutouts outside, a small group of Dreamers and activists will enter to deliver them to Senator Portman’s office upstairs.
The action targets Senator Portman because he has not yet stated a position on the Dream Act, and his support would be influential in getting Republican leaders to schedule it for a vote. Senator Sherrod Brown is already a supporter of the Dream Act, who also voted for the bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill that passed the Senate in 2013 and included Dreamer-related provisions. Senator Portman voted against that bill.
