Anti-Immigrant Activist Cannot Pronounce Sotomayor; Wants New Candidate as a Result

Will Mark Krikorian Now Call for Scalia to Change Last Name, Too?

Leading anti-immigrant activist Mark Krikorian has drawn quite a bit of attention with his National Review blog post yesterday.  In The Corner, the group blog of the National Review Online, in a piece entitled “It Sticks in My Craw,” Krikorian goes after President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, not on her judicial record, not on her professional background, nor on the many opinions she has delivered during her career as a litigator and judge, but for how she pronounces her last name.  He states that “Deferring to people’s own pronunciation of their names should obviously be our first inclination, but there ought to be limits.”  The piece was so ridiculous it earned instant fame in the netroots as the most inane and ridiculous criticism of Sotomayor to date, and earned him the dubious distinction of being named by MSNBC’s Keith Olberman as “The Worst Person in the World”.

Krikorian heads a group called the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).  Essentially, CIS is the nativist movement’s “think tank.”  They put out methodologically manipulated “studies” that shroud anti-immigrant talking points in professorial rhetoric.  They try to hide it, but they were spun off from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a group designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group.  Mr. Krikorian used to work for FAIR, but that was before he decided to reinvent himself as a traditional cultural conservative who posts blogs for the National Review rather than an employee of a group with roots in the American eugenics movement.

“We are pleased that Mr. Krikorian’s views are now reaching a broader audience,” said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice.  “It’s about time.  Despite the fact that Krikorian and his group have blamed immigrants for global warming, pinned the financial crisis on groups that hire Hispanics , and made the incredible claim that Hispanic voters don’t really matter in elections, he is featured by many in the mainstream media as  a legitimate and unbiased source of information on immigration.”
