Following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, responding to today’s developments in the House of Representatives:
The House of Representatives is going to stay in town to toughen up and try to pass anti-immigrant measures? Lord help us. Only in the whacky world of the GOP would measures to fast-track the deportation of children fleeing murder and rape as well as halt the recognition of millions of immigrants settled in America be viewed as not harsh enough.
The Republicans have taken leave of any sense of responsible governance. Over the past year, they blocked the best chance in a generation to pass landmark immigration reform legislation. Now they seem determined to block needed funds to deal with the Central American kids emergency – unless they can lather nativism all over the their nickels and dimes package.
What’s that old expression? Lead, follow or get out of the way? Time for them to get out of the way.
