100 Days Since January 6th Insurrection

“Republicans are laser focused on kids fleeing violence at the border to distract from the violence committed by their followers at the U.S. Capitol.”

The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice.

100 days ago, Donald Trump and Republican members of Congress incited a violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol. For months, they told their supporters the Big Lie. It inspired an insurrection aimed at overthrowing a free and fair election and effectively ending our democracy.

A sane political party, one committed to American democracy, would take stock of what happened, take responsibility for the excesses, and look to make amends. Instead, Republicans headed to the border.

The Republican answer to the rise of the white supremacist terror threat is to demonize Brown people, organize stunts in D.C., and don flak jackets to stage photo ops on gun boats in the Rio Grande. Forget about the people who attacked our democracy. The real threat is kids and other migrants seeking asylum and a better life.

The Department of Homeland Security puts white extremists at the top of our national threat agenda. 100 days ago, homegrown violent extremists plundered the U.S. Capitol and killed a Capitol policeman. Not immigrants. Not at the border.

Is our collective conscious so stunted and easily manipulated to forget the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol? The ‘courageous’ Trumpists who ran for cover when their mob got out of control – and then proceeded to vote to overturn a democratic election?

Republicans are laser focused on kids fleeing violence at the border to distract from the violence committed by their followers at the U.S. Capitol. The GOP is deploying the same language and stoking the same fears that inspired unhinged white extremists to kill innocent people in El Paso, Pittsburgh, and Christchurch. Tucker Carlson on Fox News, Republican candidates like J.D. Vance and Republican elected officials like Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) and Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) are working to mainstream the odious ‘great replacement theory.’

They say Democrats are protecting refugees in order to cancel out white Republican voters. We say Republicans are protecting white nationalists to cancel out our democracy. For the sake of the American experiment and the American future, let’s make sure that multiracial democracy wins.
