Welcome.us Looks Forward to Celebrating First-Ever Immigrant Heritage Month

Share This:

Welcome.us is a new organization that is dedicated to celebrating immigrants all across America. They have declared June as Immigrant Heritage Month in order to highlight the huge influence immigrants have had on this country. In June they want to focus on telling stories of immigrants and how they have transformed this country. They also want people to share their own stories about being an immigrant and how they shape or hope to shape the country.

Next week, Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) will be introducing a resolution on Immigrant Heritage Month.  As she wrote in a press release, “America has always been a nation of immigrants, and throughout the nation’s history, immigrants from around the globe have kept our workforce vibrant, our businesses on the cutting edge, and helped to build the greatest economic engine in the world.”

For one example of the courage of immigrants, look to my mother.  My mother moved to this country from the Dominican Republic in 2004. Her amazing work ethic and will was able to land her great job where she can help make a difference in the lives of other immigrants that she can relate to. Not only that, but her hard work was able to give me access to a great life and education that would not have been available to me in the Dominican Republic.

There are millions of immigrants in this country just like my mother who were willing to leave their old lives behind in order to seek a better one. Many of them end up succeeding and have been able to do things that help and change the lives of many people. All of the hard work and service immigrants do for this country deserves to be honored and their stories deserve to be told because without immigrants the US would not be the country it is today.
