Today on Morning Joe, Matt Barreto and Gary Segura, the principals of Latino Decisions, went on to talk about their new book How America’s Most Dynamic Population is Poised to Transform the Politics of the Nation.” Their discussion included a talk on how Latino voters can affect this year’s midterm elections, and how Republicans must act on immigration reform before they can seriously attract Latino voters.
As Gary Segura said about the Latino electorate, “It’s a very unhappy demographic. It’s a very optimistic population, it’s a very energetic population, but the political climate has been very toxic…Latinos have felt like they’re under attack.”
As many have pointed out, Latino voters cannot be expected to support a platform when it also includes support for deporting their grandmothers. That’s why the Republican failure to pass immigration reform this year is sure to have drastic consequences in 2016 and beyond. As Joe Scarborough put it, “You’re saying that Republicans can’t insult Latino voters and win elections?”
